What do diverse BC families need to be active?

Accessing physical activity shouldn't be an uphill battle.
Accessing physical activity shouldn't be an uphill battle.

The BC Physical Activity for Health Collaborative has released the Families Getting Active report. This report shares the experiences of diverse families across BC, including the barriers they face to being physically active, and their recommendations for change. It summarizes focus group discussions with parents, youth, and community leaders and finds that families want to be active—they just need support.

Who is this report for?

Anyone interested in health equity will find this report useful, especially physical activity and health promotion organizations and those working with equity-deserving groups.

Why was this report created?

Evidence shows that many families in BC—such as Indigenous families, newcomers and refugees, families with 2SLGBTQIA+ youth, children with disabilities, rural and remote families, and low-income families—face unique challenges to physical activity.
These challenges require targeted, community-informed solutions. The recommendations in this report are a step toward that goal. Because many participants can identify with more than one of the groups mentioned, some recommendations benefit multiple communities.

What is the Physical Activity for Health Collaborative?

Coordinated by the BC Alliance for Healthy Living, the Physical Activity for Health Collaborative brings together leaders from health, sport, recreation, and academic sectors, to improve physical activity outcomes across BC.
Despite the well-known benefits of physical activity—like reducing chronic disease and improving mental health—there are still major inequities in access. The Collaborative is committed to making physical activity possible for everyone.
