In just a few short weeks, Avery has become a beacon of joy and inspiration at Acropolis Manor in Prince Rupert. "You get so attached to the residents, playing games, having conversations, and making that connection keeps them active and happy," Avery shared with a smile.

Avery is part of an innovative new program at Acropolis Manor and Prince Rupert Regional Hospital, where high school students can volunteer through the Work and Experience (WEX) program. WEX is organized between the Ministry of Education and the school districts, who take responsibility for finding placements (work or volunteer) for the students to acquire work-related skills.

Staff member Neetu Kaur has already witnessed the incredible results. "Volunteers bring immense value to Acropolis through their dedication, passion, and commitment to our mission. Avery's work has made a significant impact on our community, and we are grateful for her contributions," she said.

Avery recalled a touching moment she experienced with a resident. "You never know when you’re going to click with someone. There was one resident who didn’t want to do a colouring activity with me, but when she saw how much fun we were having, she asked to join. At first, she was sad, thinking about the memories she had lost, but then I told her we could build a new memory today, laughing and colouring together. She was so happy to have someone to talk to in that moment. I’ll always remember what it was like to form a new friendship with someone I never would have met otherwise."

This experience has been transformative, even changing her thoughts about a future career. "I get to do all the things I love to do in an environment I never thought was possible!” she said. “This is an incredible place and the staff are amazing. I think I might want to be a care aide."

Happy National Volunteer Week to all the volunteers like Avery who are making a difference in the lives of clients across Northern Health. Thank you for your dedication and compassion!
