“I just love making connections with the residents and getting to know their lives,” says Alex Anderson, a volunteer at The Pines. “One resident told staff that she wishes I could be there every day! It makes me happy to know I’m making such a big difference in someone’s life.”

Thanks to Recreation Therapist Arlene Buckham, that resident’s wish has been granted.

The Pines is known for its excellent work, both in engaging volunteers and increasing activities and socialization for residents, which in turn allows the reduction of some medications. Last year, Arlene was able to combine those interests in a new and innovative way, finding grant funding to hire one of her volunteers.

“Volunteers are so valuable in helping our residents, but it’s hard to recruit. Young people would volunteer, but when the time came that they needed a job, I would lose them. I thought, ‘What if I could offer a young volunteer the chance of a job in the future? That might encourage others to get involved in volunteering, and help people transition towards a career with Northern Health.’ I combined that idea with continuing the work we’re already doing.”

Arlene had the perfect candidate, and the grant allowed her to hire Alex to build on the work she had done as a volunteer over the past two years.

Recruiting more volunteers is the goal

“There are a lot of residents who don’t like groups and could really benefit from one-to-one time,” says Arlene. “It’s tough to manage groups and day programs, and still find time for individual connection. An additional person who can help free staff to go where we’re most needed is amazing. There’s a huge increase in one-to-ones when we have volunteers.”

Volunteering has been life-changing for Alex. As well as growing her confidence and skill, it’s influenced her future career choice. “I was always planning to go into health care, and after volunteering, I’m considering recreation therapy. I really like this.”
