This May, we're celebrating the profession of physiotherapy and recognizing the role physiotherapists have in health promotion, injury prevention, and increased fitness and wellness. Physiotherapists combine their in-depth knowledge of the body and how it works with specialized hands-on clinical skills to assess, diagnose, and treat symptoms of illness, injury, or disability.
Physiotherapists throughout Northern Health are doing amazing work in a variety of settings, including helping people get moving after illness, injury, or surgery in hospitals; treating injuries and chronic health conditions; and working with people in their homes and communities to improve safety and health.
Many people don't know that physiotherapists work in a variety of different roles and with a broad range of health conditions, such as:
- musculoskeletal injuries
- cardiac or pulmonary conditions
- chronic or complex pain conditions
- stroke and neurological conditions
- …and so much more!
If you have a condition that is limiting your ability to engage in your life, it may be helpful to connect with a physiotherapist.
Additionally, this month we celebrate our incredible rehabilitation assistants, who are important members of our health care teams, providing rehabilitation services. Rehabilitation assistants can be found working in many different areas including acute care, long-term care, and in our communities.
Rehabilitation assistants work with clinicians to promote, restore, maintain, and/or improve a client's level of functioning in many areas, such as:
- mobility
- self-care
- productivity
- leisure
- day-to-day activities
This month, let's celebrate all our amazing rehabilitation assistants and physiotherapists for the incredible work they do!
