Did you know that rapid antigen testing kits are free for residents of BC? Anyone can ask for a kit – you don't even have to show ID!

This means that the next time you run out of shampoo, toilet paper, or toothpaste, you can also pick up your free kit at participating pharmacies across the province!

It’s important to pick up your testing kit before you have any COVID-19 symptoms, so you can use it later, in case you get symptoms. If you already have COVID-19 symptoms, and you haven’t picked up your kit yet, please send a friend or family member to pick one up for you – don’t go to the pharmacy yourself! Likewise, if you have a friend or family member that needs help getting their kit, it’s OK to pick it up for them.

How to use a rapid test

Rapid tests should be used only by people who develop symptoms of COVID-19 and want to find out if they have it.

  • Kids 14 years and younger shouldn't use a test without adult supervision
  • Tests are not suitable for international travel requirements

Each kit comes with instructions on how to use the tests. If you have questions, you can also ask the pharmacist. If you’re more of a visual learner, you can watch an instructional video produced by the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC).

What to do if you test positive

If you get a positive result, you should immediately self-isolate. This means staying home and keeping away from others to help stop the spread of COVID-19. How long you need to self-isolate for depends on your vaccination status and your age. You can learn more about the different scenarios you need to self-isolate for on the BCCDC website's self-isolation page.

What to do if you test negative

If you get a negative result, it means that COVID-19 was not detected at the time of your test. Self-isolate until your symptoms improve and you feel well enough to return to regular activities.

As a reminder, rapid tests should be used only by people who have symptoms of COVID-19 and want to find out if they have it. The tests are not suitable for international travel requirements.
