Resilient Roots: Métis Mental Health and Wellness is a magazine produced by the Métis Nation British Columbia’s (MNBC) Métis Youth (MY) Mental Health and Wellness Initiative.

Métis Youth (MY) Mental Health and Wellness Initiative

The Métis Youth (MY) Mental Health and Wellness Initiative comprises 17 core members organized into four subcommittees. Together, they work to raise awareness about youth mental health topics and to empower Métis Youth and Communities to proudly own their gifts, talents, and cultural heritage. The initiative also works to enhance mental health within the Métis Community through implementing projects, fostering education, reducing stigma, and providing opportunity for Community discussion and engagement. Resilient Roots is a forum intended to privilege Métis voices and perspectives and offer a platform showcasing topics around mental health and wellness.

The spring 2021 issue of Resilient Roots features powerful stories, poetry, photography, and personal essays from Métis Community Members across the province.

As shared by MNBC Minister of Mental Health and Addictions Kate Elliott in her “Minister’s Message” introducing the magazine, “this magazine hopes to be a testament to the shining strength and resilience of the Métis Community. Every part of this magazine – from the stories, to the art, to the poetry – comes from the powerful voices of our Métis contributors. […] we hope that what you find within these pages will bring you inspiration, connection, and act as a reminder of the deep resilience that lives within us all.”

Some of the issue’s highlights include:

  • Living With: Bipolar II Disorder
  • Book Review: Son of a Trickster
  • Does How and What I Eat Impact My Mental Health?
  • Living With: Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
