Dianne came to Canada in 2022 from the Philippines and is studying Business Management at the College of New Caledonia. A co-worker suggested that she try volunteering to gain more experience in Canadian workplaces. She was first placed at the information desk at UHNBC to help people find their way in the hospital and has recently started volunteering with the surgical unit as well, visiting clients and keeping them company during their recovery.
Seeing the hospital up close has been transformative, and Dianne is now confident she’d like to pursue a career in health care.
“I never knew I would want to be a nurse, but I can see how much good they do and how important they are to people,” she said.
There have been unexpected changes too, as she’s learned how to connect with people more easily.
“I’ve always been quite introverted, but I’m learning how nice it is to interact more.” she said. “People I would never have met without this experience share their problems, their perspectives, and life lessons.”
Her enthusiasm is evident. “Volunteering for NH has been amazing. I’ve met so many new people and learned new skills,” said Dianne. “I’m always so proud when I can help or console people.”
Dianne added, “With volunteering, you can experience and see what you really want in your life. Try it!”
Happy National Volunteer Week to all the volunteers like Dianne, who are making a difference in the lives of clients across Northern Health. Thank you for your dedication and compassion!
