Prince Rupert Regional Hospital has taken a significant leap forward with the purchase of a Stryker 1688 AIM 4K laparoscopic tower. A laparoscopic tower1,2,3 is a piece of medical equipment used in surgeries that involve small incisions, known as laparoscopic procedures. Because these surgeries use tiny cuts instead of large ones, patients can recover more quickly, and scars are much smaller. Laparoscopic towers include several important parts, including:

  • A high-definition camera: Takes clear pictures of the inside of the body. The new tower’s camera provides four times the resolution of standard HD systems, helping make surgeries more precise and less likely to result in complications.
  • A light source: Provides bright light to see better during surgery.
  • A monitor: Shows real-time images for the surgical team to watch.
  • A recording system: Allows the surgery to be recorded and reviewed later.

This new state-of-the-art equipment represents a $270,000 investment in surgical services in Prince Rupert and the local region. It was funded by the Prince Rupert Rampage Senior AA men’s hockey team, the Prince Rupert Port Authority, DP World, and the North Coast Health Improvement Society.

With this advanced laparoscopic tower, our rural community has taken a major step forward, enabling local surgeons to perform complex, minimally invasive procedures with greater precision and safety. This is particularly significant for a community like Prince Rupert, where access to advanced medical facilities can sometimes be limited.

With this technology now available locally, patients can benefit from quicker diagnosis and treatment, leading to better patient outcomes and shorter hospital stays.

As well, this leading-edge equipment enhances the hospital's ability to attract and retain skilled medical professionals. Overall, the new laparoscopic tower will significantly improve the quality of health care for residents of Prince Rupert and the surrounding region, helping create healthier and more resilient communities.
