Better supports for seniors in the North with age-friendly grants

From Kitimat to Tumbler Ridge, seven communities in northern B.C. are receiving age-friendly grants to support seniors so they can live active, socially engaged and independent lives.

A total of $729,500 in age-friendly grants is being provided to B.C. communities in 2019, including, for the first time, four First Nations communities.

Grants will be distributed to Fraser Lake, McBride, Tumbler Ridge, Kitimat, Prince George, Quesnel and Valemount.

Influenza activity increasing in Northern BC - vaccine still widely available

With influenza season well underway, Northern Health is reminding residents that it is not too late to get immunized against the flu.

As in other parts of the province, influenza and other viruses that are common at this time of year are circulating, and surveillance from health care visits and lab confirmations show influenza activity on the rise in Northern B.C.

First baby of 2019 born in Fort St. John

Northern Health is pleased to announce that Fort St. John Hospital has had its first birth of 2019, and it’s a girl!

Piper Hope McLain was born January 3rd, at 2:35 a.m., to parents Medeline and Cory McLain of Fort St. John. She weighed in at seven pounds, 10 ounces, and is welcomed to the world by four big brothers and sisters.

First baby of 2019 born in Kitimat

Northern Health is pleased to announce that the first baby of 2019 has been born at Kitimat General Hospital, and it’s a girl!

Liv Marlene Highton was born January 2nd at 5:10 a.m., weighing in at eight pounds, 13 ounces. Liv is welcomed to the world by her parents, Leslie and Brandon Highton of Kitimat, and Charlie (the family dog) to play with when she’s a little bigger.

First baby of 2019 for Prince Rupert

Northern Health is pleased to announce that the first baby of 2019 has been born at Prince Rupert Regional Hospital, and it’s a boy!

Baby Rylen was born January 2nd at 9:11 p.m., weighing in at nine pounds, two ounces, to parents Raven Stevens and Ivan Lincoln of Prince Rupert. Rylen is welcomed to the world as well by his big sister, Aubrey.

Terrace New Year's Baby born at Mills Memorial Hospital

Northern Health is pleased to announce that Terrace’s New Year’s Baby has arrived, and it’s a girl!

Born at Mills Memorial Hospital at 2:33 p.m. January 1st, to Claire and Shane Wiebe of Terrace, the baby girl weighed in at eight pounds, 12 ounces. She is welcomed to the world by her big sister Ava.

The first baby born in British Columbia in 2019 was delivered at Fraser Health’s Royal Columbian Hospital, at 12:01 a.m. January 1st.
