Annerose Georgeson, a Vanderhoof-based artist, recently completed a mural for residents in the courtyard at the Stuart Nechako Manor long-term care home. The mural is in recognition of her mother’s time spent there and is intended to enhance the lives of those living with dementia.
“It’s definitely brightened up the area and improved the quality of life for residents,” says Marnie Bell, recreation therapist. “Everyone is talking about it.”
The mural was funded through the Northern Health DementiAbility program and a local co-op grant. DementiAbility is a research-informed program that aims to ensure the environments where elders with dementia live are familiar, inviting, home-like, and stimulate positive memories and experiences.
The mural outlines the familiar Vanderhoof landscape of Sinkut Mountain, the Nulki Hills, and some Canada geese flying in early summer. The foreground depicts wild flowers including wild roses, arnica, castilleja (prairie-fire), and daisies.
“I hope that the mural makes the residents and staff feel more at home and allows them to see a bit farther away,” says Annerose.
