Unwanted medications collection on Haida Gwaii

Northern Health
Media Bulletin

Haida Gwaii Hospital & Health Centre - Xaayda Gwaay Ngaaysdll Naay, the Skidegate Health Centre and Queen Charlotte RCMP are joining forces to remove unused or expired prescription (or non-prescription) drugs from communities on Haida Gwaii.

Prescription medications are often not fully used by patients, for a variety of reasons. Forgotten and/or expired medications can collect in people’s homes for months or years, presenting a risk if they wind up in the hands of children, or vulnerable adults.

Later this month, a team of volunteers from the Haida Gwaii Hospital, Skidegate Health Centre, Queen Charlotte RCMP and other community partners will be going door-to-door in Skidegate and the Village of Queen Charlotte to collecting any unused, unwanted or expired medications that homeowners would like to dispose of. Each volunteer group will be readily identifiable with valid identification.

The medications gathered will be safely disposed of by Northern Health.

The team will conduct its door-to-door collections on:

  • January 27th, 2018 – 12:00 - 4:00 p.m. - Skidegate
  • January 28th, 2018 – 12:00 – 4:00 p.m. - Village of Queen Charlotte

Residents who will not be home during these times are encouraged to participate by taking their unwanted or expired prescriptions to the Forbes Pharmacy at Haida Gwaii Hospital, for safe disposal.
