Northern Health launches Climate Change and Sustainability Roadmap

Information Bulletin

Northern Health is proud to announce the launch of its Climate Change and Sustainability Roadmap, a bold five-year strategy (2025–2030) designed to amplify existing efforts to build a healthier, more resilient North.

The Roadmap outlines 18 key actions for the health authority across four focus areas:

  • Strengthening governance
  • Reducing emissions
  • Enhancing climate preparedness
  • Empowering community needs-driven solutions

At its core, the Roadmap envisions a climate-resilient future where health services are delivered in harmony with the land and in partnership with Indigenous peoples, local communities, and other organizations. It responds to the urgent realities of climate change while promoting health equity and community resilience. This is not new work for Northern Health; the Roadmap seeks to articulate a clear direction, coordinate action and strengthen existing efforts.

Climate and sustainability action involves everyone across the North – emphasized in the Roadmap. Health professionals and staff are key leaders in protecting communities from climate-related health risks, but real progress requires strong partnerships and coordinated action across sectors.

Northern Health is committed to continuing to reduce its operational footprint—focusing on sustainable food services, procurement, waste management, water use, and transportation. The Roadmap also supports communities in preparing for, responding to, and recovering from climate-related emergencies such as heatwaves, droughts, and wildfires.

Sustainability is about equity. Climate change disproportionately affects vulnerable populations, including seniors, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions or limited resources. By prioritizing the needs of those most impacted, Northern Health aims to create a healthier future for everyone.
