In addition to the news that Northern Health has awarded the contract for the redevelopment of the GR Baker Memorial Hospital Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit, construction of a new kitchen at the Hospital will begin this fall.
True Construction Ltd. of Kamloops, the team working on the larger Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit project, will begin construction of the modern kitchen facilities in September 2020, with expected completion in April 2021.
The newly replaced, approximately 277m2, kitchen will provide better space and flow for the work of preparing and providing meal services to patients at GR Baker Hospital. The existing kitchen space has not been significantly renewed since the construction of the hospital in 1955. It is anticipated that disruption to the Hospital’s foods services program will be minimal during the construction period as the existing kitchen will remain functional.
“The construction of the new kitchen at GR Baker Hospital, along with the recently announced hospital expansion project represent another great partnership between the Province, Northern Health and local taxpayers,” said CCRHD Chair Bob Simpson. “These improvements will better serve patients, and provide the staff with an efficient and effective space to work.”
The project value is $5.00 million and is being cost-shared between the provincial government ($2.36 million), the Cariboo Chilcotin Regional Hospital District ($2.00 million) and Northern Health Authority’s own funds ($0.64 million).
