Dawson Creek and District Hospital celebrates improved access to breast cancer screening

News Release

Northern Health and the BC Cancer Agency are pleased to announce improved access to better mammography screening in Northeast BC, with the installation of a new digital mammography machine at Dawson Creek & District Hospital.

Funding of $1,042,316 for the upgrade to digital mammography, which includes upgraded IT equipment and renovations to support the new unit, was provided by the Province of BC.

"I am pleased to see these funds come to our hospital for upgrades to our mammography equipment," said Peace River South MLA Mike Bernier. "This improved system will help with better early detection and ultimately help save lives."

The new mammography unit in Dawson Creek is the state-of-the-art, using direct digital technology to provide both screening exams and diagnostic breast x-ray exams. This delivers more sensitive images with less discomfort for the patient, allowing for a better overall patient experience.

The renovations also provide an updated, relaxing atmosphere for mammography clients, including a dedicated change area with lockable drawers for clients’ valuables, and a dedicated cooling system to maintain a comfortable temperature in the exam room.

Improvements to breast cancer screening for northern BC residents are part of the Provincial Breast Health Strategy, which aims to also improve breast cancer diagnosis and prevention across British Columbia. Regular mammograms help find cancer in its earliest stages when there are more treatment options and a better chance for successful treatment.
